  4. File://maniac is a clever little cyber-thriller puzzle adventure where you modify the game files to solve puzzles as you attempt to hunt down a murderer. In File://maniac you follow an agent who is attempting to hunt down a killer who you have tracked down to their lair. The game plays a little like a point and click adventure, but you’ll have to search the actual game files to find clues.

This page details one or more prototype versions of Maniac Mansion (NES, USA).

The prototype of the American Maniac Mansion is nearly identical to the final, except for some elements that were subsequently removed or altered at Nintendo of America's request.

Final

In the final, the blood was modified a bit so the TM symbol could fit, and the logo changed from brown to red. The logo on the character select screen still has the brown palette, though.

Text Differences

Ed and Edna Cutscene

The line 'He hasn't eaten in 5 years' was changed in the final to 'He hasn't slept in 5 years'.

ED: Daddy's been acting very strange

with this secret project...
EDNA: YEAH, SO!!!
ED: Well, Mommy, I'm worried!
He hasn't eaten in 5 years...
EDNA: YEAH, SO!!!
ED: ...and he carries those bodies
to the basement at night.
EDNA: WHAT'S YOUR POINT ED?!
I'M A VERY BUSY LADY!

ED: Never mind.

On Douglas Crockford's website, Crockford explains that this change was a request from Nintendo:

What was Nintendo's problem with the dialogue? Was it the brutal exposition of parental neglect in the disintegration of an American family? More likely, we thought they had a problem with the dead bodies in the basement...In fact, Nintendo's interpretation of the speech was that Dr. Fred was a cannibal, that he was eating the bodies. That was never our intention, so we changed Ed's speech to 'He hasn't slept in 5 years,' which helps to explain why Dr. Fred is never seen in his bedroom.

Dr. Fred and Sandy Cutscene

This piece of dialogue is used during a cutscene between Dr. Fred and Sandy:

DR. FRED: Well, my dear. Hope you're having fun!

Within minutes it'll all be over.
You'll be hooked up to my machine

getting your pretty brains sucked out.

Nintendo, according to Crockford, thought 'getting your pretty brains sucked out' was too graphic for the younger audience and suggested changing it to 'getting your pretty brains removed'.

Phone Conversations with Edna

In the final, when you call Edna she assumes she's talking to her dead cousin Ted when in reality she's having a conversation with herself. In the prototype, there is some humorous dialogue where she assumes it's a prank call:

PrototypeFinal
Hello?

Hello.
Who's there?
Is this a prank phone call?
It doesn't sound like it,
there's no heavy breathing
Here let me show you
how to do it.
Hello.
Is this you again?
If you're not going to do it
right then good bye!

Hello?

Cousin Ted?
Is that you? I've been
waiting for your call.
I haven't heard from you
since your operation.
Let me tell you what's
been happening.
It was 2 years ago today...
Hello? Cousin Ted?
Blah, blah, blah...
Wait! I think I hear a
prowler.

There's no inappropriate content to be censored here, but it was removed from the final version by choice because the porting team didn't want to come off as 'promoting' prank calls (even though it isn't).

Edna's Lines

The lines that Edna says when she puts you in the prison were changed. They were obviously cut due to depicting intentions of underage bondage. (Not to mention implied rape!) The lines depend on the gender of the character that was caught:

Girl

Prototype
Final
Lucky you're not a boy
or you'd be in trouble now!
You'll be safe here until
the police come, dearie.

Boy

Interestingly, the final is the only one to have two variants if the character is caught; these are shown at random.

Prototype
Final
How silly of me!
I should have tied you
to my bed, cutie!
Just you wait until I
talk to your mother!
OR
I have half a good mind
to talk to my husband!

She's still harsher on the boys in the final, but the implied tone is completely different.

Ending

In the prototype's credits, there are two places where 'SCUMM' (an acronym for Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion) is referenced. According to Crockford, Nintendo was worried what players might think when they see the word NES with a word that looks like scum, so he took out the mentions of SCUMM.

Is there any way to download the original version of this game? I wanted to replay it after trying the DC but I can't find a download for it.

In the original Junji Ito comic he just moves away. Presumably he experienced the same thing Mimi did when he peeked through the hole and hauled ass.

I played this and Incredible Furture and loved them both! The art style, characters and story felt very true to the original PA games, you've captured its unique universe perfectly.

Thanks for the reply!
I'm unzipping the demo like you said and opening this file:

After that I get a message saying the file can't be opened because the developer cannot be verified (which is normal and happens for anything I download on itch.io), I go to my settings to bypass this message, then when I try to open the file again it just crashes after a few seconds.

Let me know if there's something I'm doing wrong - I'm on OS Catalina by the way.

This game looks really great but I cannot get past the boss battle. If there was a way to give the player character a buffer after losing health so they can't take too much damage in a row, have their health slowly build back up during combat, or fully/partially restore at the start of each phase, I think that could go a long way to make this a little less frustrating. Or even just a lower difficult setting for people who are more interested in story over combat.

Really fun game, but is the demo meant to save between sessions? I found 5 stars and closed the game to take a break, but when I re-opened it all my progress was lost :c

ETA: I used the in-game save checkpoints and everything.

In the first room I found the number on the map, the clock and the toilet, how do you find the fourth number? I'm guessing it has something to do with the sink, but after I got hot water in it nothing happened and I swear I've clicked every possible thing in the room.

Love this so far, there was a lot more content than I was expecting from a demo and this seems like a very promising meta RPG game. Looking forward to the full release!

I got this same error but managed to get it to work by dragging the game from the DMG window to my Desktop and starting it from there.

This was incredibly cute! I'd love to see more paranormal adventures with this crew.

Great game! Lovely story, endearing characters and the creepy bits felt very Lovecraft but at a kid's birthday party.

Enjoyed this series a lot more than I thought I would. It's got a really great art style, a strange mix of whimsical and twisted humor, and endearing characters. Sparky is best boy.

Cool demo, but the Mac version crashes every time I finish the cutscene after the battle with Mr Duck.

A little short but I really enjoyed this so far, like all the other commenters I love the art style especially. I don't really have a sense of where the story is going but I'm definitely interested to find out.

Great game, I randomly found this while browsing itch's Most Recent section and I'm glad I did because I really enjoyed it. Love the artstyle and story, and the atmosphere was as calm and peaceful as it was slightly disconcerting. Awesome job!

Really cool game with great atmosphere and visuals. The game so far feels like it could be a standalone but I'm still looking forward to seeing more from this project.

Thanks so much!! This worked perfectly, not only for this game in particular but also some other games I've had trouble opening on my Mac. I'm not sure why this issue keeps popping up ever since I upgraded to Catalina but you're a lifesaver!

Thanks for the quick reply! I'm on OS Catalina. I'm not sure if it would work in this particular case but I had a previous experience where a game launched sucessfully through Steam even though the direct file on Itch.io didn't work.

Mac version is a bit glitchy. After reading Sparky's letter and transporting to the Lavender Town tower, anytime I try to move I keep getting an error, and I'm assuming to progress I need to go down the bloody stairs but the game won't let me.

Any chance this is getting a Mac version? The game seems cool and the art style is really interesting.

I thought this was an incredibly cool and unique game. The file directory aspect was intuitive and seamless and I'm glad there was a reset button in case I ever messed up. I do wish it was a little longer and had more of a narrative since it felt like it was just scratching the surface of the real story. Awesome job though!
